The Renaissance

King Jesus Bridge 1973
More often than not this tiny California label that's persevered over the years has pleasantly surprised me in its ability to deliver wonderfully charming folk lps. The Renaissance with their moody acoustic brand of melodic folk stand among the finest. As with other Bridge artists such as Take Three and The Wedgwood there's a strong emphasis on harmony. 'Isaiah 55:1' opens the lp in dreamy baroque fashion with acoustic guitar, harpsichord and recorder to which these young men apply their calm soothing harmonies - it's got to be one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Many such moments can be found on this gentle masterpiece that consistently mesmerizes with its beauty. One of the more unusual tracks is 'Four Days' with a chilling psych feel, haunting dissonant vocals and eerie organ accompaniment. KS
