Burbank, California, was Bob's birthplace and he grew up in nearby Tujunga. Bob's introduction to music came at thirteen when his uncle bought him his first guitar. He proceeded to teach himself to play, and by the time he was fifteen, Bob had joined his first rock 'n' roll group.

During the next few years, Bob became involved in half a dozen groups. After a brief stint in a junior college, he joined a group called Houston Fearless and began traveling extensively on the West coast. The group recorded an album, which was unsuccessful and soon afterwards they disbanded.

Disenchanted, Bob dropped out of the music scene and moved to Oregon. When he returned to California, Bob moved into Freddie Piro's recording studio and began working at a nearby factory. The next few months were difficult for him. Hopelessly searching for some answers, Bob turned to the Bible, and, shortly thereafter, he dedicated his life to Jesus. Several months later, Bob was on his way to meet Jay, Chuck, and Tommy in Malibu.
