Chuck Girard grew up during the post-war period in Los Angeles, California. His childhood was spent in various parts of Southern California, with his family finally settling in Santa Rosa, a city just north of San Francisco. During his high school years there, Chuck developed his interest in music.

Fascinated by the vocal harmonies of his choral class, he was soon applying what he'd learned to a small rock `n' roll singing group. He decided to make a career of music and the following years found Chuck involved in many aspects of the music industry.

He recorded a multitude of songs during this time, among them "So This Is Love" & "Sacred" by The Castells and "Little Honda" by The Hondells which became national hits.

As the music scene changed, so did Chuck's life style. He became involved in the drug culture and as the years passed, that involvement grew deeper and deeper. Finally, it became apparent to Chuck that he was ready for something else. Little did he realize what was in store for him when he met with Jay, Fred, and Tommy in the fall of 1969.
